and combatants: Agents for change?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recent events in the Northern Ireland peace process centered on the growing need to \u201cdeal with the past\u201d have underscored the passive and active roles that ex political prisoners and combatants can have in post conflict peacebuilding.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This conference, organised in Belfast, was a partnership between the ICTU and Trademark, and offered\u00a0insights into the roles that former conflict actors play actively in working and public life as workers, trade unionists, community activists and political representatives.\u00a0 Various attempts to deal with the past however have presented a number of issues and barriers to the ex-prisoner community in fulfilling their roles in post conflict society.\u00a0 What does this mean to the integrity and sustainability of the peace process as a whole?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speakers included Seanna Walsh of Coiste na nIarchimi, Peter Bunting of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Itziar Sustatxa Martinez from the Basque ex-prisoner constituency and Peter Shirlow from Queens University Belfast.<\/p>\n<p>The event
